The Hoherkasten lies on the border between Canton St. Gallen and the canton of Appenzell Inner Rhodes and is part of the Alpstein and the communities Altstaetten and Sennwald. Atop the St. Gallen Rhine Valley, the Hohe Kasten is the gateway to the Swiss Alps. The striking mountain peaks is developed since 1964 by the Appenzeller side with a cable car. It requires only 8 minutes to overcome the 871 m height difference from Bruelisau. The High box is located in the hiking region of the Alpstein. On the mountaintop, there is a rotating restaurant, which opened in May of 2008. A family-friendly hiking trail leads from Bruelisau by Eggli, the Forstseeli and Kamor of the Hoher Kasten.
