The name of Cattolica was born in a dispute between Catholic bishops and Arians.
At about the point where today stands Cattolica, a Roman settlement was originally built. The area was both a passage station for travelers on the route from Bologna to Rome as well as for the pilgrims who went to Loreto or San Pietro.
