Gera is a city in the east of Thuringia and after Erfurt and Jena, the third largest city in terms of population and area the second largest city of the Free State of Thuringia and the largest population of all medium-sized town in Germany. Gera is situated on the Weisse Elster in eastern Thuringia hills about 200 meters above sea level. The city of Gera was the heyday of the fabric and cloth industry one of the richest cities in Germany. Gera is home to the University of Cooperative Education Gera, a private medical college, and was the venue for the National Garden Show 2007. The city of Gera is located in the east of the Free State of Thuringia in the valley of the river Weisse Elster and is almost completely surrounded by the Greiz; in the north bordering the city of Saxony-Anhalt.
