Malta is a municipality in the district of Spittal an der Drau in Carinthia. The territory of Malta, with an area of 261.77 km² the second largest in Carinthia and the sixth largest in Austria. Malta occupies the majority of the Carinthian Malta valley, which coincides with the Liesertal in Gmünd. Malta is in the west of the Reisseckgruppe, in the north and north-west from the main ridge of the Hohe Tauern with the Hochalmspitze (3360 m) and the Grand Hafner (3076 m), and to the east by Reitereck. Since the Hohe Tauern National Park was established in 1987 extended to the Ankogelgroup, including 8570 ha of the municipal territory of Malta to the National Park.
