Emperor Henry II gave the area around Iberg about a thousand years ago, the monastery of Einsiedeln. Later it became the property of the municipality of Schwyz, used it as a summer pasture. At the beginning of the 20th century the population lived almost exclusively from the alpine farming, later Oberiberg was discovered as a resort and tourism began to be an important source of livelihood for the community. Shortly before World War II, a first ski lift was built in Oberiberg. At the time, this was only the third in Switzerland.
