The name of Zermatt, as well as that of the Matterhorn itself, derives from the German Matte, which means meadow. The name appeared first as Zur Matte and became later Zermatt.

Prato Borno is the older name of Zermatt; it appears in the ancient maps from the thirteenth century. The French-speaking people from the Aosta Valley and from the French-speaking part of canton Valais used this name until the mid 19th century in the form of Praborne, or Praborgne. The reason of this change from Praborno to Zermatt is due to the replacement of the Romance-speaking people by German-speaking colony.
